Review: Tattered by Devney Perry

REVIEW

It’s here ! If you haven’t heard, Tattered, @devneyperry latest release is now available! Earlier this year I binge read her Jamison Valley series, so I was very excited to get back into this world. Her writing style is so effortless and you gain a true sense of authenticity with the characters she creates.

The love story between Thea and Logan was great. In fact, I was shocked to see Logan again after his brief stint in The Clover Chapel. He sort of rubbed me the wrong way in The Clover Chapel, so I was glad he got a sense of redemption in this book.

Devney’s witty dialogue, along with a well crafted plot, truly makes her books the epitome of “page turners”.

With everything combined, I give this book a solid 4/5 stars. Everything was great, but the single parent trope is always one I’ve struggled to connect with so I didn’t enjoy it as much as others. I still highly recommend! Devney has quickly become a top author of mine. And those book covers 😍.

SYNOPSIS

Thea Landry has always known her place in modern-day society. It’s somewhere just above the trash can her mother dumped her in as a newborn but below the class where much comes easy. With her tattered shoes and bargain-bin clothes, her life has never been full of glamour.

So when a rich and charismatic man takes interest, she doesn’t fool herself into thinking their encounter is anything more than a one-night stand. Months later, she’s kicking herself for not getting his phone number. Or his last name. She’s given up hope of seeing him ever again.

Until one day, years later, Logan Kendrick waltzes into her life once more and turns everything she’s built upside down. This time around, she won’t make the same mistake. She’s going to fight to keep him in her life—not for herself.

But for their daughter.

EXCERPT

He stared at me for a long moment. “You’re sure she’s mine?”

“She’s yours.”

“Then that’s good enough.”

“I—really?” I blinked. He didn’t want to verify paternity? He just . . . trusted me?

He nodded. “Really.”

“I swear, I tried to find you, Logan. On my life, I swear it. But the hotel wouldn’t give me your name no matter how much I begged. And you paid cash for your drinks and never mentioned your last name. I tried, but I just . . . didn’t know where to start.”

“It’s not your fault. I believe you.”

The sincerity in his voice made my throat burn. Goddamn it. I was going to cry.

I’d worked so hard not to cry today. I’d fought to keep my emotions in check and my head from spinning out of control. But this was going to make me break.

I wanted so badly for Logan to believe that I hadn’t kept Charlie from him intentionally. The fact that a man like him would trust someone like me without proof meant more than he’d ever know.

“Thank you,” I choked out past the lump in my throat.

“So, um, is Charlie inside with your husband? Or boyfriend?”

The urge to cry disappeared and I barked out a laugh. “Smooth.”

He chuckled. “It’s been a long day for me. Give me a break, will you? This morning I was in New York, then I came to Montana for a business meeting and discovered a daughter. I’m off my game.”

Review: Bro Code by Kendall Ryan

BroCode teaser6.jpg
Happy Monday fellow bibliophiles!

In case the title of this post didn’t tip you off, I have a new book up for review! Bro Code by Kendall Ryan is  her newest contemporary release – and it was so good! In one sitting I completely binge read the whole thing!

I absolutely loved Ava and Barrett, the two main leads. Their chemistry was spot on, and despite some of the plot points being pretty cliche, there was a twist that I did NOT see coming. Once that point was revealed I was FUMING – I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a gooder.

Honestly the only issue I had with this book was the setting/time of the story.  It was snowing and described as being super cold, which was weird as I was reading outside in 26 degree Celsius weather (79F for all you Americans out there)!

But all in all, this was another great contemporary romance read by Kendall Ryan. The trope was “brother’s friend”, which is one of my favourite romances to read. The slow-burn and trying to deny the growing attraction between the two main characters was so well done. Read the brief synopsis below, and be sure to add this book to your TBR!

SYNOPSIS:

From New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan comes a flirty new standalone about falling for your older brother’s best friend.

There’s pretty much only one rule when you’re a guy.

Don’t be a douche.

Turns out, the fastest way to break that rule is to fall for your best friend’s sister.

Ava’s brilliant, sharp-tongued, gorgeous, and five years younger than me.

She’s the sexual equivalent of running with scissors. In a word, she’s dangerous. And completely off-limits.

Falling for her could ruin everything.

Yet I can’t seem to stop, even when her company is threatened by a lawsuit, and my promotion hinges on representing the opposing client—and winning.

I can’t see a way out of this mess that doesn’t end in a broken friendship, a broken heart, or a ruined career.

I may have broken the bro code when I fell for Ava. But do I have the balls to handle what comes next?

REVIEW: Two Wedding Crashers by Meghan Quinn

TWC available now.jpg

It’s review time and man, is this a good one! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for Two Wedding Crashers by Megan Quinn – courtesy of Inkslinger PR (seriously they are the best!!) So without delay – let’s get into the good stuff!

Review:
I read this book immediately after finishing book one, so I loved how we got to continue with Beck’s story. I grew to enjoy his sexy demeanour and bad-ass vibe, so it was fun to get inside his head this time around. Rylee was also a fun female-lead to follow around. She has relatable quirks and her awkward moments felt like I was reading a autobiography. To say Rylee and I are similar is an understatement! The writing was fresh and fun, and I felt myself laughing out loud at some of the antics. I was starting to find myself looking forward to Rylee and Beck banters – they were so fun!

In regards to the romance – it was definitely an “insta-love” moment, but it was set up in a way that wasn’t too cliche and it was fun getting to see their relationship grow. All the little twists and turns were surprising (though I did guess correctly on a few!)

My only issue with the book was the ending – and I had a similar problem with book one. The book was wrapped up to quickly for my liking, and there wasn’t enough conflict for me. Maybe that’s just my cynical side rearing it’s ugly head- but I would have loved for a little more angst. However, this was a small issue – and the book truly was a fun and enjoyable read.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Emma Hart and Kennedy Fox! It’s a perfect romantic comedy with enough emotional turmoil to make the story feel real and relatable.

SYNOPSIS:

I don’t know what love is anymore.

Well, that’s not entirely true, but I’m going to tell you a little secret: I’ve lost the spark.

You know the kind of spark I’m talking about?

Where butterflies take flight in your stomach from two hands innocently colliding. Or catching your breath when you first meet someone attractive. Yeah, that spark.

Except I haven’t felt that feeling in forever; there is nothing left inside of me.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem–but I’m a writer on a serious deadline, and my editor is breathing down my neck for a romantic, Nicholas Sparks type love story. No pressure, right?

That’s how I find myself flying across the country to crash a wedding in the name of research, dress and heels stuffed into my small suitcase.

It should be the easiest book research ever. Drinking some free champagne, basking in the love of two strangers, and tapping into my romantic side. That will be a breeze. I’m a pro. I can handle this.

Until I mistakenly end up in the wrong hotel room, naked as the day I was born, with the sexiest human I have ever met staring me down, wondering what I’m doing taking a shower in his bathroom. I don’t think calling it research will get me out of this pickle.

Review: The Law of Tall Girls by Joanne Macgregor

review picture 1
Review:

As soon as I read the title of this book – I knew this was a book for me. I’ve always been considered “tall” – though by the female protagonist, Peyton’s, standards I’m sure I’m just average height (I’m 5’10 whereas Peyton is over 6 ft.) However, I think those few inches separating us can be ignored based on our similarities.  Throughout the book Peyton’s challenges echoed my own experiences.  Struggling to shop for jeans that fit properly? Been there. Developing a height radar to judge how tall people are? Done that. And the ensuing frustrations that occur when you see a small girl with a tall guy? Hell hath no fury like a tall lady scorned.

So if you are looking for a cute, contemporary, young adult read then I do recommend this novel. While it is filled with a few standard high school cliches – the plot brings light to struggles that aren’t usually talked about – tall girl problems. It was relatable to me and I really enjoyed making those connections.   However, the height issues aren’t the main points driving the plot. There are some other intriguing and engaging side plots that make you feel a whirlwind of emotions. I won’t go into them for the sake of spoiling the book – you’ll just have to read it to find out for yourself!

The one daunting thing about this book was that it is a little bit on the longer side of a contemporary read. For me, I’m used to reading contemporary reads in just a couple hours but this one definitely took me longer. Despite the length though, the story line didn’t lag.

Over all, I really enjoyed this book. It was light and refreshing and included a lot of important messages. The Law of Tall Girls is out NOW and you can pick up the book here.

Synopsis:

When you really stand out, can you ever fit in?

Seventeen-year-old Peyton Lane is a tall girl. So tall, it’s the only thing most people notice about her.

On impulse, she accepts a bet to prove she can be as attractive and desirable as other girls. Now she just needs to go on four dates (including the prom) with one of the guys on her very short list of very tall boys.

Number one on the list is Jay Young – the new guy that Peyton already likes way more than she should. Because not only is Jay already taken, he’s also breaking her Law of Tall Girls, and he’s determined to discover the awful secret she’s been hiding for most of her life.

Funny and romantic, The Law of Tall Girls is a feel-good, heart-warming read for anyone who’s ever felt different, or like they just don’t belong.

This young adult contemporary romance will appeal to fans of Kasie West, Stephanie Perkins, Jenny Han, Julie Buxbaum and Morgan Matson.

Review: This is Dangerous by Kennedy Fox PLUS FREE BOOK!

review

A few months ago I came across the anonymous writing duo that is known as Kennedy Fox. I was curious to see what all the hype was about, and wondered if I would even enjoy this genre of writing. Well, my previous worries were completely unfounded as I binged both Duets in a matter of days. I was hooked. Absolutely-110%-no looking back obsessed.

The waiting game for this third and final duet was TORTURE. But fortunately enough, I was accepted to be part of the Kennedy Fox InstaFam. Not only do I get to help promote this wonderful series and interact with fellow Checkmate-obsessed bibliophiles, but I also got an ARC of This Is Dangerous, the first instalment in the final duet.

This is Dangerous is the first book in Kayla and Logan’s story. We were previously introduced to these characters in the other Checkmate Duets (I highly recommend reading those first!) and I was so excited to finally experience their love story. Boy was it worth the wait! I think this could be my favourite couple! Who doesn’t love a good story involving dogs, donuts and detectives hmm?

Kayla and Logan relationship follows  the “second chance at love” trope, and I think I find these stories the most intriguing. Instead of an insta-love relationship, you have a slow burn romance that keeps you on your toes and begging for the characters to finally act upon their internal desires.

Without giving too much away (because seriously, you need to experience all of the #TeamLayla goodness on your own) Kennedy Fox brings to you a book series that is the perfect mix of romance, sexy times, quirky humour and fan-appreciated pop culture references (FYI – Sarah .J Maas was referenced and I fangirled so hard). All of these things combine to create an amazing story that the reader can relate to.  I beg you to give this series a chance so you can become as immersed in this world as I am! We need more Kennedy Fox converts in the world!

PS. The only thing I think that I can complain about in regards to this series is the fact that I have to wait til SEPTEMBER to read the second book. Let’s just say the ending of This is Dangerous was completely bonkers and I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS RIGHT MEOW. Do you hear me Kennedy?!

Also did you hear me when I said FREE BOOK!? For a limited time, This is War (Book One of the first Checkmate Duet) is FREE. That’s right… FREE! And This is Love is only 99 cents! This is the perfect way to experience the magic of Kennedy Fox. Free books = the perfect motivator in my world!

This second-chance romance will have you gasping and cheering this two on from the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the final game?

***

Logan Knight is a real life knight in shining armor.
A detective godsend in a sleek black suit has me thinking less than secretive thoughts. Brooding and mysterious, he’s the kind of guy every girl instantly notices. Between his seductive smirk and charming good looks, it’s no wonder I can’t help the way he makes me feel whenever I’m near him.
Too bad he’s unavailable—or so he says.

He thinks I’m a do-gooder who shouldn’t get involved with a guy like him. His past is messy and relationships just add to that. He insists the timing is all wrong and he’s devoted to his career, but I don’t buy that excuse for a second. I see the way his body tenses and his jaw ticks every time another guy is around me. He just won’t admit it, but I’m more determined than ever to show him what he’s missing.

I’m a devoted animal rescuer and I’ll risk everything to save them, but when a dramatic turn of events puts both our lives at risk, I’m positive Logan will write me off for good. But when he asks for my help with a personal crisis, I know it’s my last chance to finally show him I can handle anything he throws my way—messy past and all.

He might think he has me all figured out, but I’ll prove him wrong no matter what he thinks. This game of push and pull has me running in circles. One wrong move and we could both lose.

Checkmate, Knight.

*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.*

**This is book 1 in the Logan & Kayla Saga–a second-chance romance. You don’t need to read any of the other Checkmate series to enjoy this one, but is always recommended as they are both introduced in the earlier books.**

Review: Alabama Summer series by J. Daniels

These books. How do I even begin this review? Well first of all, I am going to completely blame two of my bookstagram buddies for my newest addiction. Brie and Becca …. what have you done to me?! I was suffering from a book slump and these came at just the perfect time. But while I am super happy for the book reading marathon that I went through to finish all five of these books in three days … I am also a little peeved because now I’m ruined. Why do these men cease to exist in real life?!

*cue moment of silence while I live my life in solitary*

But actually – these men are everything. So without further ado, let’s travel down south to Ruxton, Alabama!   Continue reading “Review: Alabama Summer series by J. Daniels”
