Review: Tattered by Devney Perry

REVIEW

It’s here ! If you haven’t heard, Tattered, @devneyperry latest release is now available! Earlier this year I binge read her Jamison Valley series, so I was very excited to get back into this world. Her writing style is so effortless and you gain a true sense of authenticity with the characters she creates.

The love story between Thea and Logan was great. In fact, I was shocked to see Logan again after his brief stint in The Clover Chapel. He sort of rubbed me the wrong way in The Clover Chapel, so I was glad he got a sense of redemption in this book.

Devney’s witty dialogue, along with a well crafted plot, truly makes her books the epitome of “page turners”.

With everything combined, I give this book a solid 4/5 stars. Everything was great, but the single parent trope is always one I’ve struggled to connect with so I didn’t enjoy it as much as others. I still highly recommend! Devney has quickly become a top author of mine. And those book covers 😍.

SYNOPSIS

Thea Landry has always known her place in modern-day society. It’s somewhere just above the trash can her mother dumped her in as a newborn but below the class where much comes easy. With her tattered shoes and bargain-bin clothes, her life has never been full of glamour.

So when a rich and charismatic man takes interest, she doesn’t fool herself into thinking their encounter is anything more than a one-night stand. Months later, she’s kicking herself for not getting his phone number. Or his last name. She’s given up hope of seeing him ever again.

Until one day, years later, Logan Kendrick waltzes into her life once more and turns everything she’s built upside down. This time around, she won’t make the same mistake. She’s going to fight to keep him in her life—not for herself.

But for their daughter.

EXCERPT

He stared at me for a long moment. “You’re sure she’s mine?”

“She’s yours.”

“Then that’s good enough.”

“I—really?” I blinked. He didn’t want to verify paternity? He just . . . trusted me?

He nodded. “Really.”

“I swear, I tried to find you, Logan. On my life, I swear it. But the hotel wouldn’t give me your name no matter how much I begged. And you paid cash for your drinks and never mentioned your last name. I tried, but I just . . . didn’t know where to start.”

“It’s not your fault. I believe you.”

The sincerity in his voice made my throat burn. Goddamn it. I was going to cry.

I’d worked so hard not to cry today. I’d fought to keep my emotions in check and my head from spinning out of control. But this was going to make me break.

I wanted so badly for Logan to believe that I hadn’t kept Charlie from him intentionally. The fact that a man like him would trust someone like me without proof meant more than he’d ever know.

“Thank you,” I choked out past the lump in my throat.

“So, um, is Charlie inside with your husband? Or boyfriend?”

The urge to cry disappeared and I barked out a laugh. “Smooth.”

He chuckled. “It’s been a long day for me. Give me a break, will you? This morning I was in New York, then I came to Montana for a business meeting and discovered a daughter. I’m off my game.”

Review: Bro Code by Kendall Ryan

BroCode teaser6.jpg
Happy Monday fellow bibliophiles!

In case the title of this post didn’t tip you off, I have a new book up for review! Bro Code by Kendall Ryan is  her newest contemporary release – and it was so good! In one sitting I completely binge read the whole thing!

I absolutely loved Ava and Barrett, the two main leads. Their chemistry was spot on, and despite some of the plot points being pretty cliche, there was a twist that I did NOT see coming. Once that point was revealed I was FUMING – I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a gooder.

Honestly the only issue I had with this book was the setting/time of the story.  It was snowing and described as being super cold, which was weird as I was reading outside in 26 degree Celsius weather (79F for all you Americans out there)!

But all in all, this was another great contemporary romance read by Kendall Ryan. The trope was “brother’s friend”, which is one of my favourite romances to read. The slow-burn and trying to deny the growing attraction between the two main characters was so well done. Read the brief synopsis below, and be sure to add this book to your TBR!

SYNOPSIS:

From New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan comes a flirty new standalone about falling for your older brother’s best friend.

There’s pretty much only one rule when you’re a guy.

Don’t be a douche.

Turns out, the fastest way to break that rule is to fall for your best friend’s sister.

Ava’s brilliant, sharp-tongued, gorgeous, and five years younger than me.

She’s the sexual equivalent of running with scissors. In a word, she’s dangerous. And completely off-limits.

Falling for her could ruin everything.

Yet I can’t seem to stop, even when her company is threatened by a lawsuit, and my promotion hinges on representing the opposing client—and winning.

I can’t see a way out of this mess that doesn’t end in a broken friendship, a broken heart, or a ruined career.

I may have broken the bro code when I fell for Ava. But do I have the balls to handle what comes next?

Review: Needing Him by Kennedy Fox

needinghim-teaser10

This review is going to be short and sweet – not because the book doesn’t deserve a novel length review (it does!) but because you need to quickly read my review and then go get the book and spend your time on that! (you can purchase the book here)

In typical Kennedy Fox form, Needing Him is a must read for any romance readers. The trope is enemies to lovers office/medical romance – which means there is SO MUCH ANGST AND GLORIOUS TENSION. You won’t be disappointed. Grey-Sloane Memorial isn’t the only hospital that utilizes the storage closet creatively.

What made Needing Him a must-read for me, was the fact that Evan (ah beautiful Dr. Bishop) overcomes some serious emotional baggage. This isn’t your typical wham-bam-thank you ma’am read. The fact that these wonderful authors can also create a story that plays with your heartstrings,  says so much about their talent.

Finally – UGH THAT ENDING. I need Chasing Him right now. I need things to be explained. I demand answers. And I’m not sure I can wait until June! Ugh the suspense is KILLING ME!

On that note (hehe) … Chasing Him is up for some presales here:

Review: Taming Him by Kennedy Fox

taminghim-banner-1reviewKennedy Fox has done it again. I didn’t think it was possible- yet here I am. What is it that they’ve done, you may ask?

Two words. Taming. Him.

Another knock-your-socks-off read has been made available to you this week and I highly recommend picking it up. This book gives you all the necessary warm and fuzzy feelings , and Alex Bishop is the perfect Southern gentleman.

For the most part this book was highly engaging and I felt connected to both River, the strong female lead, and Alex. He was such an unexpected sweet heart. My only concern with the book was that there wasn’t enough conflict for me. I felt the story needed a little bit more drama and twists and turns.

That being said – this book as completely set itself up to be a killer series. I CANNOT wait to become introduced to the next three brothers. Evan – I’m coming for you.  John – I can already tell my heart will be yours. Jackson – boy you are going to be trouble. Who says you only need one book boyfriend in you life? Shhh don’t tell the others.

If you want a a dash Southern romance, that has you craving for some down-home lovin’ – then I highly recommend this book. Also – don’t forget to check out Kennedy Fox’s shop to snag your self a wonderful book box full of amazing, and delicious, western swag!

*Each Bishop Brothers novel is an interconnected standalone*

Alex Bishop is your typical cowboy.

Charming, sexy, and wears a panty-melting smirk.

Working on the ranch helped build his solid eight-pack and smoking body. He’s every girl’s wet fantasy and he knows it too. Alex doesn’t follow the rules of your typical playboy bachelor. After wining and dining his dates and giving them the best night of their lives, he always sends flowers and calls the next day—even if it’s to say, let’s just be friends. His mama taught him manners after all and his southern blood knows how to be a gentleman. Still, that isn’t enough to tame the wildest of the Bishop brothers.

River Lancaster has finally met the man of her dreams. Too bad after six months of romantic bliss, she finds out he’s married. With a broken heart and blind rage, she books herself a ticket to Key West, Florida. Tired of cheaters and liars, she’s set on escaping to forget he ever existed. Who needs a man when there’s an all-you-can-drink margarita bar, anyway? That’s what she tells herself until she bumps into the right guy who can make all those bad memories disappear.

Even if it’s only temporarily.

Two weeks on the beach is what they both need. No strings attached, no expectations, no broken hearts. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll change the entire course of their lives in just nine short months.

Review: The Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson

Welcome to my first blog post of 2018! I’ve made it a New Year’s resolution that I’m going to focus more on posting for this blog. I let it go for most of 2017, with only posting a handful of times. But this year I want to get more into a schedule and post more routinely. Fingers crossed I can keep it up!

ANYWAY – now that we got that out of the way, let’s get into the review! This book was the second book I read this year (after K.A. Tucker’s Keep Her Safe – review coming next week!) and I’m honestly starting my 2018 reading year on such a great foot. The Wolves of Winter was an incredible debut author by Tyrell Johnson.

the wolves of winter

Title: The Wolves of Winter
Author: Tyrell Johnson
Rating: 4.5 / 5 ⭐️’s
Synopsis: A captivating tale of humanity pushed beyond its breaking point, of family and bonds of love forged when everything is lost, and of a heroic young woman who crosses a frozen landscape to find her destiny. This debut novel is written in a post-apocalyptic tradition that spans The Hunger Games and Station Eleven but blazes its own distinctive path.

Review:

The novel follows Lynn McBride (her full name is Gwendolynn, but do not call her that) and her family, trying to survive in the wild of Canada’s Yukon Territory.  They were forced from their comfortable lifestyle in Chicago years ago, and eventually their escape has brought them to the Yukon. Johnson does an incredible job describing the various situations that the characters run into. With such realistic descriptions, the reader experiences the harsh truths that the wilderness has to tell, and fully witnesses the reality of trying to make it on one’s own with no power or modern resources. It is a dystopian future that feels all too accurate and a potential foreshadowing of decades to come.

With survival at the forefront of everyone’s mind, Lynn starts to uncover the reasons for their change of lifestyle. Situations become more clear (or unclear depending how you look at it) as a stranger stumbles upon their humble “village” of makeshift cabins. Overall, the McBride’s past comes back to haunt them and their solitary utopia may no longer be a place of refuge and safety.

The writing style is fast past and engaging. The reader feels immersed in this world and it isn’t always pretty. There are dark moments, some that could be triggering depending on one’s own experience, but in the end the power of independence and determination is shown. At times the plot did lag – but in a way that was reminiscent of Rae Carson’s Walk on Earth a Stranger.  The daily routines of this humble and harrowing lifestyle could seem monotonous, but it sets the setting of the story up perfectly and shows the reader the reality of the situation.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction, mixed with suspense and the “unknown”. The reader is truly left wondering what will happen next. Some of the conclusions were predictable, but overall the story was engaging. I can’t wait to see what Tyrell Johnson comes up with next – hopefully a sequel, as this book left a few strings untied.

Thank you Simon & Schuster Canada for sending me an advanced reader copy of this book. It is greatly appreciated!

Review: The Law of Tall Girls by Joanne Macgregor

review picture 1
Review:

As soon as I read the title of this book – I knew this was a book for me. I’ve always been considered “tall” – though by the female protagonist, Peyton’s, standards I’m sure I’m just average height (I’m 5’10 whereas Peyton is over 6 ft.) However, I think those few inches separating us can be ignored based on our similarities.  Throughout the book Peyton’s challenges echoed my own experiences.  Struggling to shop for jeans that fit properly? Been there. Developing a height radar to judge how tall people are? Done that. And the ensuing frustrations that occur when you see a small girl with a tall guy? Hell hath no fury like a tall lady scorned.

So if you are looking for a cute, contemporary, young adult read then I do recommend this novel. While it is filled with a few standard high school cliches – the plot brings light to struggles that aren’t usually talked about – tall girl problems. It was relatable to me and I really enjoyed making those connections.   However, the height issues aren’t the main points driving the plot. There are some other intriguing and engaging side plots that make you feel a whirlwind of emotions. I won’t go into them for the sake of spoiling the book – you’ll just have to read it to find out for yourself!

The one daunting thing about this book was that it is a little bit on the longer side of a contemporary read. For me, I’m used to reading contemporary reads in just a couple hours but this one definitely took me longer. Despite the length though, the story line didn’t lag.

Over all, I really enjoyed this book. It was light and refreshing and included a lot of important messages. The Law of Tall Girls is out NOW and you can pick up the book here.

Synopsis:

When you really stand out, can you ever fit in?

Seventeen-year-old Peyton Lane is a tall girl. So tall, it’s the only thing most people notice about her.

On impulse, she accepts a bet to prove she can be as attractive and desirable as other girls. Now she just needs to go on four dates (including the prom) with one of the guys on her very short list of very tall boys.

Number one on the list is Jay Young – the new guy that Peyton already likes way more than she should. Because not only is Jay already taken, he’s also breaking her Law of Tall Girls, and he’s determined to discover the awful secret she’s been hiding for most of her life.

Funny and romantic, The Law of Tall Girls is a feel-good, heart-warming read for anyone who’s ever felt different, or like they just don’t belong.

This young adult contemporary romance will appeal to fans of Kasie West, Stephanie Perkins, Jenny Han, Julie Buxbaum and Morgan Matson.

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL by Kennedy Fox

reviewIt is with a heavy, but fulfilled heart, that I’m here today to share with you the end of a glorious era. It has been a whirlwind of a year – but all great things must come to an end. And while the absence of these amazing characters will leave a donut-size hole in my heart – I know these authors are just making room for bigger and better things (*cough* BISHOP BROTHERS *cough*)

If you haven’t guessed already, I’m talking about the conclusion of the third Checkmate Duet – THIS IS BEAUTIFUL, that was released yesterday. For just over a year, Kennedy Fox (co-authors Brooke Cumberland and Lyra Parish) has been tugging at our heartstrings. They’ve developed female leads that I want to be best friends with … and they’ve created strong men that have raised the standard for future boyfriends. There are cliffhangers that make you want to throw things (seriously – I almost LOST it between THIS IS WAR and THIS IS LOVE ..) and emotional moments that make you feel things (all these couples go through so much!) Overall the reading journey is so complete that you will be left begging for more (literally – I’ve DM’d Kennedy Fox demanding for more stories).

Since there are three Duets, with three different couples, it is inevitable that you will have your favourites. I know I developed my favourite couple early on (Travis and Viola – Duet #1 This is War/This is Love) but Logan and Kayla’s story, which concludes with THIS IS BEAUTIFUL, literally made me cry. Their story — *ugh* my heart couldn’t handle the ending of THIS IS DANGEROUS, the first book in their Duet.

If my vagueness in regards to storyline bothers you, I do apologize! I do this with a purpose because I want you experience these books in a unique and organic matter. I find that it’s really easy to talk about what the book is about (see synopsis below) and lose sight of how the book made you feel. And these books made me feel ALL THE FEELS.

If my begging and pleading hasn’t encouraged you to pick up these books based on the characters and storylines (PLEASE READ THEM .. I need more people to share my love with) THEN DO IT FOR THE FOOD CRAVINGS. Seriously. Each book makes you want to either devour a field of strawberries, bake an insane amount of blueberry muffins, or try new things (hehe) with donuts.

Overall, I can’t recommend this series enough. If your a fan of engaging, new adult reads, then you should add this to the top of your TBR list. Each Duet can be considered stand-alone, but for the optimal reading experience I do suggest this reading order:

Checkmate Duet #1-2 (Travis and Viola)
– This is War
– This is Love

Checkmate Duet #3-4 (Drew and Courtney)
– This is Reckless
– This is Effortless

Checkmate Duet #5-6 (Logan and Kayla)
– This is Dangerous
– This is Beautiful

Kayla Sinclair is a saint and real-life angel.
She wears her heart on her sleeve and inspires me to be a better person.

Rescuing dogs, feeding the homeless, and volunteering at the local food pantry are just a few of the ways she gives back to others, although no one has ever been there for her. Falling for her was inevitable, losing her will destroy me.

Letting someone in didn’t come easy, but she made me want to try for the first time in years. Her bubbling personality and kind spirit make it impossible to forget a girl like her. But when tragedy strikes and she loses all memory that our relationship ever existed, my worst nightmare comes to life.

I’ll do anything to remind her of the love we shared. I know it’ll be an uphill battle, but I won’t walk away without a fight. Whoever said all is fair in love and war never played by my rules.

Checkmate, Angel.

**This is book 2 in the Logan & Kayla Saga. This is Dangerous must be read first. However, you don’t need to read any of the other Checkmate duet series to enjoy this one, but is always recommended as they are both introduced in the earlier books.**
